General Information

Absentee Policies:

State law, referred to as the “Becca Bill,” requires schools to aggressively work with families of students who have unexcused absences. Parents whose child has one unexcused absence will receive a letter or phone call from the school. Two unexcused absences will result in a personal contact. Five unexcused absences in any one-month period, or a total of ten during any year, requires the school district to pursue court action. ‚ÄčA written excuse from parent or guardian is required every time a student is absent from school. The note should be with the student upon return to school, or state law requires the absence to be recorded as unexcused. If the absence has not been excused within three days, it is recorded as unexcused or truancy.

Asbestos Update:

In compliance with the U.S. Environmental Protection (EPA) Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA), in the fall of 1988 we performed inspections of each of our school buildings for asbestos-containing building materials. The inspection findings and asbestos management plans have been on file in each school administrative office since that time. The EPA requires us to perform re-inspections of the asbestos materials every three years. Routine surveillance is conducted every six months on remaining ACM materials. The results of the re-inspection are on file in the management plan in each school’s administration office. Everyone is welcome to view these anytime during school hours.

FERPA Notice of Directory Information:

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), a federal law, requires that the Omak School District, with certain exceptions, obtain your written consent prior to the disclosure of personally identifiable information from your child's education records. However, the Omak School District may disclose appropriately designated "directory information" without written consent, unless you have advised the District to the contrary in accordance with District procedures. The primary purpose of directory information is to allow the Omak School District to include this type of information from your child's education records in certain school publications. Examples include:  · A playbill, showing your student's role in a drama production; · The annual yearbook; · Honor roll or other recognition lists; · Graduation programs; · School website; and · Sports activity sheets, such as for wrestling, showing weight and height of team members. Directory information, which is information that is generally not considered harmful or an invasion of privacy if released, can also be disclosed to outside organizations without a parent's prior written consent. Outside organizations include, but are not limited to, companies that manufacture class rings or publish yearbooks. In addition, two federal laws require local educational agencies (LEAs) receiving assistance under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (ESEA) to provide military recruiters, upon request, with three directory information categories - names, addresses and telephone listings - unless parents have advised the LEA that they do not want their student's information disclosed without their prior written consent. If you do not want the Omak School District to disclose directory information from your child's education records without your prior written consent, you must notify the District in writing. The Omak School District has designated the following information as directory information: · Student's name · Participation in officially recognized activities and sports · Address · Telephone listing · Weight and height of members of athletic teams · Electronic mail address · Photograph · Degrees, honors, and awards received · Date and place of birth · Major field of study · Dates of attendance · Grade level · The most recent educational agency or institution attended.

Free Development Screening:

The Omak School District provides Free Developmental Screenings for children, ages birth through 21, who have suspected development delays. If you have concerns about your child's development, please call the Early Childhood office at 509-826-8139.

Home School Filing:

Parents providing home-based instruction to their children must, under state law, file the following information with their local school district: 1. Child’s name 2. Child’s grade 3. Child’s birth date 4. Credentials, if any, of home instructor Parents may file this information at the Omak School District Superintendent’s Office at 619 West Bartlett Ave. between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. The due date for filing is September 15th or within two weeks of the beginning of the school quarter.

Medication Reminder:

Students who are to receive medication at school, including over the counter medications, must have an “Authorization for Medication at School” signed by the prescribing physician and parent. The form is available at school offices. The medication must have a current pharmacy label matching the physician and orders and be in the original container. The parent or designated adult (over 21) must bring the medication to school. Children may not transport medication. No medication will be given without physician and parent authorization. In some instances children are allowed to carry medication on them. This must have approval from both the school principal and school nurse. Medication regulations are set according to state law, RCW 28A.210.260 and 270.

Protection of Pupil Rights Amendment (PPRA):

Pesticide Notification (annual):

Omak School District #19, in accordance with RCW 17.21.415, has established new procedures for the notification of use of pesticides on school property. Pesticides that may be applied on a regular basis include the following: Nufarm Credit Systemic Herbicide, Nufarm Weedar 64 Broadleaf Herbicide 2,4-D Amine, Zero In insecticide spray, Wasp A Foam foaming Insecticide spray. These pesticides may be applied on school grounds and/or in school buildings. Commercial applicators or district staff may apply these pesticides. Omak School District has established a registry system for the advance notification of each pesticide application. Any person who would like to be included in the advance notification system will be required to register in the Omak School District Administration Office. Copies of pesticide use and annual summaries will be available at the Administration Office, 619 W Bartlett, Omak, WA 98841 .

Sexual Harassment:

The Omak School District is committed to a positive and productive education and working environment free from discrimination, including sexual harassment. The district takes seriously its duty to provide an environment free from harassment. The district prohibits and will not tolerate sexual harassment of students, employees and others involved in school district activities.

Transfer of Education Records:

To protect your child's privacy, schools are generally prohibited from disclosing personally identifiable information about your child without your written consent. Exceptions to this rule include: · disclosures made to school officials with legitimate educational interests; · disclosures made to another school at which the student intends to enroll; · disclosures made to state or local education authorities for auditing or evaluating federal- or state-supported education programs, or enforcing federal laws that relate to those programs; and · disclosures including information the school has designated as "directory information." Under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), school officials may disclose any and all education records, including disciplinary records and records that were created as a result of a student receiving special education services under Part B of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, to another school or postsecondary institution at which the student seeks or intends to enroll. Upon request, the Omak School District discloses education records without consent to officials of another school district in which a student seeks or intends to enroll, or is already enrolled if the disclosure is for purposes of the student's enrollment or transfer. A school official is a person employed by the School as an administrator, supervisor, instructor, or support staff member (including health or medical staff and law enforcement unit personnel); a person serving on the School Board; a person or company with whom the School has outsourced services or functions it would otherwise use its own employees to perform (such as an attorney, auditor, medical consultant, or therapist); a parent or student serving on an official committee, such as a disciplinary or grievance committee; or a parent, student, or other volunteer assisting another school official in performing his or her tasks. A school official has a legitimate educational interest if the official needs to review an education record in order to fulfill his or her professional responsibility.

Weapons are banned:

It is a violation of Omak School District policy and state law for any person to carry a firearm or dangerous weapon on school premises, on school-provided transportation, or areas of other facilities being used exclusively for school activities and a school sponsored events. The law requires a mandatory one-year expulsion for any violation. See Policy 4210
