Nurses Appreciation Day
East Omak Elementary’s 5th grade hosted a Cinco de Mayo celebration honoring our community’s Hispanic people. This event introduced students to the Hispanic culture in an engaging and entertaining way. Students experienced authentic Hispanic traditions as well as cuisine! Students enjoyed presentations by local community members Monica & Pablo Ibarra and their daughter Perla. Adamarys Montoya was also in attendance, wearing authentic folkloric regalia to exhibit her family’s dancing tradition. Each classroom offered a different educational experience, such as creating Hispanic art, displaying museum artifacts, viewing agricultural connections, and enjoying traditional meal offerings. Students responded positively to the event, and all involved wanted to see it repeated annually.

Mrs. Agee’s 4th-grade classroom was converted into a Reading Skills Surgery Clinic to prepare for the Smarter Balanced State Assessment. Students were tasked with dressing like surgeons and, in surgical units, required to read various passages about the human body and answer questions based on different reading skill targets. Once their response was correct, they tried operating on the patient (Operation game). If the surgery was successful. They received an X-ray of their patient and charted whether it was a healthy or an unhealthy X-ray in their paperwork. If the operation was unsuccessful, they were required to report to their supervisor for an incident report question about the passage and try again. The end goal was to create a diagnosis based on the tests assigned to their patient. Mrs. Agee received the donated gowns, gloves, and surgery caps from Mid Valley Hospital. Students had a blast and found the task engaging and challenging.

Students in East's Afterschool Native Enrichment class are learning to bead. Taught by East’s Counselor, Katie Abrahamson, this class focuses on reading traditional stories, making snacks of natural foods, and beading keychains for Mother's Day projects. Project helpers include Miranda Miller, Talei Abrahamson, and Airion Andrews. We are so grateful!
